This week we began observing our mealworms. On Monday, we named them and performed a few experiments. First, we measured how many centimeters long our mealworms were. Some were 2 cm, while others were 2.5 cm. They performed three experiments and recorded their reactions. We blew gently on our mealworms, tapped on the desk next to him, and dripped a drop of water on him. |
Some students found that when they blew on their mealworm, it was able to stop itself. When they tapped on the table, it lifted its head and looked around. Last, when they tried to drip the water on its head, it moved before the water could hit it.
Today, we learned what the larvae, pupae, and adult looks like. The mealworm is the larvae. We observed a few in the pupae stage today. One began to shed its exoskeleton! It was the end of the day so we were unable to see it completely shed it's exoskeleton. We will see what it looks like tomorrow! Here is a video on our class Facebook page. But the sound is quiet, if you turn up your volume you will be able to hear the excitement of our students! Having them get this excited, makes me excited as well. Even though the mealworms, pupae, and the beetles gross me out.
Some of our students made a home for their mealworm named "Boby Junior."

Bugging Out
We had a visitor in our classroom today. She is a praying mantis! She was visiting from a second grade classroom. She is quite large and has an egg sack accompanying her! Excuse the quality of images. Her cage was very reflective!
All in all, this week will be very "lively." I think being in the classroom more has made me realize more puns than ever. Some kids love it, others don't get it. At least I'm not to the point where they label me "weird!"
Anyways, hope you are having as great of a week as I am. Happy Fall!
